CRISTIANO Ronaldo split with model girlfriend Irina Shayk after they rowed because she refused to attend a surprise 60th birthday party for his beloved mum, it was claimed today.
The footballer spent New Years Eve alone with his son after the Russian beauty said she wouldn’t go to the secret party he was organising in his native Madeira, leading Portuguese daily Correio da Manha reported.
The newspaper, which yesterday broke the news he had confirmed the split to his family, described the argument as the “straw that broke the camel’s back” after Irina’s relationship with Ronaldo’s doting mum Dolores Aveiro and sisters Elma and Katia took a turn for the worse.
Irina, 29, sent the rumour mill into overdrive by appearing to publicly unfollow her boyfriend of nearly five years on Twitter.
The dramatic move came after she failed to attend the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich on Monday.
Cristiano, 29, joined by his four-year-old son Cristiano Jr on stage after being awarded his third Ballon d’Or, thanked his family, teammates and supporters in his acceptance speech but made no mention of Irina.
Later reports suggested the Real Madrid striker had called time on their relationship because the Russian model was unwilling to give up her career and become a stay-at-home wife and mum.
A source close to the footballer told Portuguese daily Correio da Manha today the end came after the row over Dolores’ birthday party during the couple’s Christmas break in Dubai.
The source said: “Cristiano wanted to surprise his mum and as he spent Christmas with Irina in Dubai, he had planned to be with him mum on her birthday, but Irina didn’t want to go.
“They had such a big row that he ended up spending New Years Eve alone with his son.
“It was the straw that broke the camel’s back because they had hadn’t been getting on well in the last few months.”
The paper also claimed Irina decided to stay in a hotel during one of her recent trips to Madrid because Dolores, pictured with tears streaming down her cheeks after her son won his third Ballon d’Or, was at Cristiano’s luxury home on VIP estate La Finca.
“Dolores thinks Irina wasn’t the right woman for Ronaldo’s son,” the source told Correio da Manha.
Irina and Cristiano, who started dating after meeting on an Armani photoshoot, have yet to comment officially on reports they have split.
Irina’s PR representative has claimed he model did not attend the Ballon d’Or awards because she had other commitments.
The comment raised eyebrows because the date of the Zurich ceremony had been fixed nearly a year in advance.
Dolores is known to be a huge influence in the life of Ronaldo, whose alcoholic dad Dinis died of liver disease in September 2005.
The mum-of-four revealed in an approved biography released last year that she had picked Ronaldo’s son up from a private hospital in Florida while her son was playing in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The former Man U striker has managed to keep the youngster’s mum’s identity a closely-guarded secret, with reports over the years claiming she is everything from a surrogate mum to a woman he had a one-night stand with.
Cristiano’s older sister Elma has admitted Cristiano Jr is still in the dark about who had given birth to him but the family regarded Dolores as his mum.
Speaking in her approved biography, released under the title ‘Mother Courage, of the moment Cristiano told her he would be a father, Dolores said: “I’m going to have a child and I want you to be the one to help me educate him and give him love, as you’ve always done with me and my brothers and sisters.
“The mother of the baby will never be known.”
She also revealed Cristiano had forgiven her despite her admission she tried to abort him after a doctor refused to help her interrupt the pregnancy by drinking warm beer and running till she dropped.
