Survivors of an assault by Islamic militants that killed thousands in Nigeria have described days of relentless violence in which some people were slaughtered ‘like insects’.
Villagers fled the carnage in and around Baga, a town in Borno state that lies in the north-eastern corner of Nigeria, after the killings which unfolded several days after Islamic militants Boko Haram seized a key military base.
Satellite images show the scale of destruction. The first, which shows a densely populated area highlighted in red, was taken on January 2. The second was taken on January 7.
Around 2,500 people were killed and many fled the area. More than 3,700 buildings were destroyed in the days of violence.
