Does your doctor call you by your first name? Does he or she hug or kiss you when you arrive or leave?
If so, you could be putting your life in danger – and might be well-advised to switch to a doctor you’re less familiar with.
Doctors who allow themselves to form a social bond with patients found it difficult to tell the truth when dealing with difficult subjects such as cancer – and more alarmingly, they found it difficult to make objective decisions on drugs and treatments.
Doctors commonly form social bonds with patients – with two-thirds using first names, and another two-thirds allowing patients to hug or kiss them when greeting.
But such bonds can lead to doctors being unable to make important decisions objectively – and to provide the best treatment in each case..
