A serial shoplifter has avoided jail for his 101st conviction – despite telling magistrates he steals every day.

Scott Caldwell had been out of prison for less than a month when he stole five bottles of alcohol from Waitrose in Wymondham, Norfolk, before returning four days later to steal a further eight.

And despite telling Norwich magistrates that he steals ‘every day’, he was spared jail – on the grounds that another spell in prison would not change his behaviour.

‘Scott has now scored his century,’ said Michael Cole, defending.

‘They will be his 100th and 101st theft for which he has been convicted.
