iPhone 6 buzz: September 19 release date, no sapphire display, leaked Apple logo, larger battery and others

The next iPhone is expected to be announced in mid-September and this year the excitement surrounding the upcoming Apple smartphone is even more intense because two iPhones are rumored to be presented.

The most important rumor this week came from Re/code who reported that both the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones could be unveiled at an event taking place September 9th.

Given Apple’s tradition of launching products a week after their release, the devices could arrive in stores on Friday, Sept. 19.

The smartphones’ possible release date was also subject to a research note by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who believes that issues in the production of in-cell touch panels and low-yield might prompt the delay of their launch.

Rumors about differences between the two smartphones also appeared.

Cowen & Co. analyst Timothy Arcuri claims that the 5.5-inch device could bring a more powerful processor than its smaller sibling.

He also believes the larger iPhone’s processor could feature a larger die, suggesting that the chips for the two handsets could be fabricated in different plants and using different processes.

However, the 4.7-inch model is rumored to pack a 2100mAh battery, a post by ESM-China news chief analyst Sung Chang Xu alleged.

Xu claims that the 1,810 mAh battery that appeared in leaked images last month was only meant for testing purposes.

In addition, VentureBeat reported that both the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones will be presented at the September 9th event but the phablet version might ship several weeks or even a month later.

The site’s source also indicated that the devices might not come with a sapphire display, and that the material they will feature will be “slightly harder than Gorilla Glass but not as hard as sapphire.”

Other rumored features include a 2.0GHz A8 chip, NFC capabilities and 802.11ac WiFi, as well as a technology by which the iPhone could be paired with the Beats headphones using the Lightning connector.

Moscow-based luxury company Feld & Volk posted the completed version of the rear case for the 4.7-inch iPhone that leaked online last month.

The images show the volume button cutouts appearing recessed and an external ring for the rear camera, with claims that the smartphone will have a protruding camera.

The embedded Apple logo looks similar to the logo on the first iPhone released in 2007 and it is suggested that it could be made from a Liquidmetal alloy.

Finally, a long flexible cable previously seen in leaks is assumed to be for the Home button.

YouTube user iCrackuriDevice shared a video that compares the alleged shell of the future iPhone 6 to the iPhone 5S.

The casing seemed to indicate that the next iPhone will have a larger screen and will be thinner.
